The National returned to Leeds for the first time since 2019 to deliver an epic two-and-a-half-hour set at the First Direct Arena

Coming at the end of a week which saw them release a surprise album, The National returned to Leeds for the first time since 2019 on Saturday evening to deliver an epic and exhilarating live set for the ages.

Kicking off with a quartet from these two albums, there is a noticeable rawer edge to these new cuts, with 'Eucalyptus' an early highlight, a more muscular, shouty and anthemic take on the album version. A brilliantly hectic rendition of 'Squalor Victoria' follows as the band set about exploring every avenue of their 24-year-old career. The band have played more than 80 different songs on their current world tour, leaving no corners of their discography untouched.

'Smoke Detector' is a highlight from the newest album and works perfectly in a live situation, with an irresistible guitar riff building and building around Berninger's stream-of-consciousness delivery. The quiet songs also land, with 'Pink Rabbits' a thing of beauty and live favourite 'About Today' leaving the crowd in awe. You could hear a pin drop during the silent moments.

The encore saw the fans treated to the first-ever live rendition of the title song from 'Laugh Track' before a rip-roaring version of 'Mr November' that saw another Berninger odyssey deep into the crowd, with 'Space Invader' from this week's new album the latest in the band's arsenal of epic set closers.
