. I’ve suspended my disbelief about the resurrection of Country Lurch in a jacket that looked like a Barbour X Sgt Pepper collab. I’ve turned a blind eye to sober Miranda going into a Chipotle and ordering two tacos in a chain that has only and forever sold tacos in sets of three.
But one can only be pushed so far. And for me, that point arrived in the form of Charlotte York-Goldenblatt scheduling a Valentine’s Day dinner, via OpenTable, for 5:30pm.
But more to the point: Five. Thirty. FIVE THIRTY. Unless you have one Hangisi in the grave, 5:30pm is not a time to have dinner. At a push, it is the point at which you start thinking about a glass of wine after a punishing day before googling “alcoholism warning signs” in Incognito mode while uncorking a bottle of French burgundy with your teeth.
Having dinner before 6pm is the lifestyle equivalent of wearing elasticated pants in public. It is, to paraphrase Karl Lagerfeld, a sign of defeat, a clear indication that you have lost total control of your life . Yes, I’m aware that there are supposedly health benefits to dining early on microgreens at what is basically still lunchtime in continental Europe before smugly drifting off to sleep to the dulcet tones of your favourite Calm instructor as twilight descends.
