England even looked good with 14 men - they need to keep it up

. The more time he has at 10, the better he’ll play, and the team too. I’d be amazed if he doesn’t start again versus Japan, and he will have another week in training in the box seat. That makes four games in a row as the voice at fly-half.I’m chuffed to bits to see Manu Tuilagi playing with a smile on his face, and because that is the way he’s feeling, we are going to see a better Manu on the field.

It is 12 years since he played in his first World Cup – when he quite literally made a splash, leaping off a ferry in Auckland harbour. I was there in 2011, and Manu, or “Chief” as all the players know him, is still the same now – by which I mean he is still respected, is still world class and he has got to be in the team. There are many times you’d have doubted he’d make it.

The stuff he is doing at the moment, it’s not blockbuster but, man, he is effective, and he is integral to the way the team will perform. He is only going to need one moment a game, like the big tackle on his opposite number, Santiago Chocobares, to really change a game or light it up. I can see him getting through 60 or 70 minutes, with good carries, good contacts, staying in the game and being highly effective.

He is also at an age now where he is a father and he has matured as a player, to the point where he is comfortable in his skin. He had so many injuries and other setbacks, and I can empathise with that, and it gets you to the stage Manu has reached, that every time he pulls on the England jersey, he is the guy enjoying the occasion. In the right way, win or lose, he is smiling.
