Antony says his Coronation Street character Sean Tully - a man ‘unapologetically who he is' - would not exist without Queer As Folk. And he feels the soap’s creator Tony Warren, who was openly gay himself, did much to bring the LGBTQ+ community to a wider audience. “When Coronation Street began, it was filled with iconic women because television wasn’t allowed to have gay characters back then, so he wrote them all as his favourite women,” Antony said.

This year we have seen a rise in transphobia, drag queen Cheryl Hole faced hatred simply for appearing on Celebrity Masterchef and one of Manchester’s Gay Village businesses was repeatedly targeted by vandals. Things feel febrile. But as Adam writes, all these moments are why Manchester Pride remains vital.
First British gig in the middle of a council estate Elsewhere in the city this weekend there’s another big event taking place. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are due to play at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday, with 25,000 fans expected to attend. Chief Superintendent Phil Davies said the public must report ‘anything that doesn’t feel right’. Andy Burnham has made some announcements about what to expect from the Bee Network. As Joseph Timan reports, there will be 50 new electric buses in Bolton and Wigan on routes serving parts of Bury, Salford and Manchester from September 24. These new buses will have audio-visual announcements and charging ports for mobile devices.
As Chris Gee reports, developers hope to create a ‘flexi-hall’ and build a new roof. The proposals include the demolition of existing buildings on Murray Road, 47 – 51 Market Street and 2 -10 Princess Parade to build a new flexible events hall. A new canopy structure would be erected to cover the existing outdoor market and temporary permission is also sought for a construction compound on the market car park.
The site, which was home to business Call 24/7, was abandoned back in 2010. It is now boarded up with shards of shattered glass and the charred interior visible in some of the buildings.
