The latest mega-breakthrough on room-temperature superconductors is probably nonsense StuartJRitchie spoke to several top physicists, and they’re not convinced ⬇️
, entitled “The First Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor”, we have. The study, by researchers based in South Korea, reports a superconducting material named LK-99 made from a specially-prepared combination of copper and lead. There’s apparently no need for high pressures or low-temperatures: the material shows superconducting properties under normal, everyday conditions.on LK-99 was accompanied by a video of a small piece of the material “levitating” above a magnet.
Professors Susannah Speller and Chris Grovenor, of the University of Oxford’s Department of Materials, jointly toldthat the reports were “interesting, but not wholly convincing”. If the material really was a room-temperature superconductor, they argued, there are features one would expect to see in the data. One thing that’s clear is that there’s a “sharp drop” in resistivity, which is consistent with superconductivity.
What about that levitation video? Dr Sven Friedemann, associate professor at the University of Bristol’s School of Physics, toldthat it, and other data in the paper, “could stem from other phenomena”. Graphene, the high-strength arrangement of carbon for which physicists won ain 2010, “is also diamagnetic [displaying repulsion like a superconductor] and can produce weak levitation”. The video, in other words, could have a non-superconductor explanation.
