Hundreds more schools could contain reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) than is currently known - with the Government vowing to publish a full list of affected institutions by the end of this week

, an expert in construction engineering and materials who led a major national research project on RAAC for the University of Loughborough, explained that because the majority of RAAC panels form roof sections which are usually flat, they can be difficult to access, survey, maintain and replace.

Though the material was only ever given a usable lifespan of around 30 years, the government have said that expert advice changed and that in the 1990s it was believed that even time-expired RAAC wouldn’t pose a risk.Concerns over the risks of RAAC reportedly began to emerge by the mid-90s. In 1999, the Standing Committee on Structural Safety , a structural engineering organisation, advised owners of buildings with RAAC that had been constructed pre-1980 to conduct inspections.
