The 19th-century architecture lends an all-pervasive elegance to the streets. I often found myself lagging behind the family gazing up at the imposing houses, half-expecting some Belle Époque character to emerge.
Deauville is made for strolling – if you can tear yourself away from the windows of the unfeasible amount of boulangeries and patisseries displaying their jewel-like offerings. There are also four Michelin-starred restaurants. The surrounding countryside has long been home to stud farms, attracting Duc Charles Auguste Louis Joseph de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III and thoroughbred horse breeder to the region in the mid-19th century.

Our evening finished with a light show and DJ – quite the spectacle, as different generations danced away by the racecourse.Before what became known as “un gros problème,” we visited Honfleur and Bayeux. Honfleur is a 30-minute drive from Deauville and it’s pleasurable just to potter around the harbour, painted by the likes of Monet. It’s rammed with small galleries and tourists and you may find yourself treated to an impromptu cider-tasting.
