Nature is embraced in Finland, throughout the seasons, with autumn providing the ideal conditions for appreciating the colours of the forest – and the Northern Lights
“This actually started when somebody joked, ‘wouldn’t it be great to get the perfect latte in the forest’,” says Steffan Wunderink, the campfire barista and Riitta’s husband. “That’s when I remembered my grandmother, who would make herself a cappuccino on a gas stove. I thought: ‘what she did on the gas stove, I can do on a wood fire’.”
“Finns like to spend time in nature and every season has something else to give, whether that’s berries, fishing, mushrooms, hunting, skiing, or swimming.” Just a five-minute drive from the resort is Immelkartano, a floating sauna with a seasonal bonus. Autumn’s cooler conditions offer an edge over winter visits – our skipper can steer the wooden sauna vessel out to the centre of Immeljärvi Lake. The cool breeze is enough to provide a welcome respite to the wood-fired heat.
Northern Lights Village in Levi is one of Finland’s top spots for watching the natural phenomenon. Its cosy wooden cabins have wrap-around windows, allowing you to lay in bed with the fire on next to you, as the lights dance across the night sky. Hopefully, anyway; they are capricious.
