Launched on this day in 2003, the Glasgow-based airline had its wings clipped within just a couple of years.

Precisely 20 years ago, on March 29, 2003, Air Scotland began operations from Glasgow International Airport.

But all was not as it seemed. Air Scotland initially had two Boeing 757-200s at its disposal, both of which were actually owned and operated by Electra Airlines of Greece. Following a short-lived link-up with Air Holland, which collapsed in 2004 due to financial troubles, the Glasgow-based airline then began operating under the air operator's certificate of Greece Airways. But by this point, the firm was already down to just one 757 aircraft.

Passengers stranded Things came to a head at Palma de Mallorca when Air Scotland's solitary Boeing 757 was grounded over unpaid fuel bills. Irate passengers were left stranded for up to 17 hours, with armed police even being called in as tensions boiled over.
