From the drag queens and performers to the couples and friends, these are the faces of Manchester Pride 2023
If you stand at the intersection of Canal Street and Chorlton Street in the Gay Village duringeclectic mix of bold outfits, glitter and rainbowsYou can see it, and you can feel it in the air. It's bold, bright and totally refreshing.Sadly though, an event like Pride is still one of the only chances many people may feel to truly be themselves - to wear those sparkling cowboy boots, short shorts and see-through crop tops.
Pride still remains a hugely important event here in Manchester and across the world, not only for people to fully express themselves but for their voices to be heard, and conversations to be platformed. In the last twelve months, there's been a dramatic rise in anti-trans hate in the country.
Coupled with the hateful rhetoric over drag queens and repeated instances of vandalism targeting businesses in the Gay Village, and serious assaults in the Village too, this year's Pride is needed more than ever as an act of defiance against all of that. To capture the very essence of this year's Pride and this show of defiance and solidarity, Manchester Evening News photographer Kenny Brown took to the streets to take portraits of some of the many people attending this year's event from the drag queens and performers to the couples and friends attending together for a great time.
