Often overlooked by its more glamorous neighbours Nice and Cannes, Marseille is a port city rich in culture and history.
As France’s oldest city, Marseille is bursting with historical places to visit. Overlooking the city from its highest point - La Garde - is the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, a stunning 19th-century Romano-Byzantine basilica. It’s built on the foundations of a 16th-century fort and from the hilltop you can enjoy 360-degree views of Marseille.
Its two wings house the Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum respectively. To the rear of the Palais is the Parc Longchamp, which contained a zoo from 1855 to 1987, and you can still see the remains of some of the cages today.
