The EU has moved on, but Britain remains trapped in a doom cycle over Brexit 🔴Analysis from LeoCendro

There are occasionally twinges of regret at the loss of the island nation that once brought a stream of practicality and diplomatic finesse to the European project. But mostly the EU has moved on like a wife has rediscovered herafter her wayward ex quit. By contrast, after flouncing out, Britain is still obsessed with the relationship. Its politics are trapped in a doom cycle,This mismatch is partly due to strategic choices.

Earlier this year, the EU seemed taken by surprise by Russia’s invasion. The bloc’s leading voice on the world stage,, travelled to Moscow in an ill-fated attempt to dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin from sending in the tanks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz seemed particularly complacent, assuming his country’s dependence on Russian oil and gas would deter Mr Putin.

But Europe has stayed firm. Many countries have also sent weapons to Kyiv, despite criticism that some, including Germany, should do more. Within three days of the invasion, Mr Scholz announced an epochal change, or “” to German foreign policy and committed €100bn to modernise Germany’s military. Other countries moved to boost their military. Finland and Sweden, neutral for generations, applied to join Nato. Europe also opened up to Ukrainian refugees.
