In its penultimate episode, Hugo Blick’s meandering Western sharpens its focus
have been six episodes? The story which it appears to be telling – and it’s much clearer now that plot points are being pulled together – could probably have been told in three, or maybe four hours, of well-crafted TV. But while the show became occasionally baggy , there has been a pleasant sense of ease to the whole thing.is in no rush to reach its destination, and if you can bear the plot complications, that’s no bad thing.
But Cornelia has already beaten Eli to Black-Eyed Mog. The women’s tabletop showdown is a tense, horrifying affair . We learn a little more about this villain – her eyelids were removed by Native Americans, so she has scalped around 50 in revenge – and alsoIn the episode’s stand-out sequence, Cornelia informs Black-Eyed Mog that Eli has been sent to kill her. Just as she questions the tip off, Cornelia shoots her. Cornelia then kills one of Black-Eyed Mog’s sons.
Thrillingly, the rest of the episode is mostly devoted to Eli and Cornelia, now heading off to Wyoming together. They have another one of their long, moonlit conversations and then kiss . Cornelia runs off immediately after, and Blunt’s expression conveys a tortured desire: she clearly wants to kiss this man, finds some kind of longed-for comfort in him, but something is pulling her away. Is it a sense of duty? It seems to run deeper than that.
We then devolve into more bloodshed, as the pair head to meet Major Mackay . He is taking Native Americans in and teaching them how to be more American . He makes plenty of fairly insidious comments about Native American women, one of whom Eli recognises as Touching Ground . Eli lets her know that her son, White Moon , is with them, which prompts Touching Ground to run off and find him.
The episode ends with a shoot-out, as Cornelia and Eli to escape the camp. It’s another tense, well-choreographed routine, as they hide behind a fallen horse and bags of money. Eventually, Mackay is seen off by Touching Ground in a rousing, bittersweet conclusion. As the dust settles, and Eli finds his bearings, Cornelia faints . Next episode: the finale, and hopefully some answers.
