The death of pocket money ⤵️ Research shows eight in 10 parents now now offer alternatives to pocket money: 📱 Extra screen time 💤 Later bedtimes 👭 Having friends round 🍬 Or the ever-reliable sweets

, handing over something that doesn’t come back. One parent I know says when her sons want to buy something online, their money boxes have to be raided, saying: “I want them to physically hand over the money before I’ll use my card, rather than taking it off a future payment, so they have a sense of actually spending something.”

Money must be deeply confusing to young children these days. To my five-year-old daughter, it’s essentially a toy – 90 per cent of the transactions she has witnessed have been done with a card or phone, withonly coming out at fairgrounds, 2p fountains at seaside arcades, or to power the rides in service stations.

For parents prone to overthinking, pocket money is easy to tie yourself in knots about. Paying a child not to fling their underpants around the house feels like offering the wrong incentives. Being helpful shouldn’t be something one does for money, surely? If a toilet roll runs out, you don’t put a new one on because of the promise of sweet financial reward, you do it to be a helpful member of a household where everyone has a clean bottom.
