You can go on a bear hunt in this historic village - and there's also a farm shop and an ancient pub 🧸
Head into the historic village of Brereton in Cheshire this summer, and you're sure of a big surprise. For the cute little village, just a mile off the M6 at junction 17, is filled with adorable BEARS across August.
The pub, The Bear's Head, is an imposing black and white timber building on the main A50 running through the village dating back to 1615. It is named after the local Brereton legend that would go on to inspire the annual Bear Festival. The hall sits adjacent to the parish church, which can be found on a winding country lane accessed through the hall's former Gatehouse. And St Oswald's is the hub of the Brereton Bear Festival which runs until August.
Opposite the pay-for car park at the nature reserve, you will also find the burgeoning Little Cow Shed business - with self-dispensing milk shakes and ice cream vending machines that prove popular with visitors and walkers. That name was said to have originated from the town using its - public money intended for a new Town Bible - on buying a bear for the cruel sport of "bear baiting."
Visitors can buy a programme for £5 at local shops and at the church to be able to fill in all the names of the bears as they find them - it includes a map of the general areas where you can find them and a form for nominating your favourite bears too. The farm shop is run by the Hopley family, who have farmed here for decades. The shop itself is in a converted barn on the site, which also boasts a small play area, sand pit and seating outdoors for those sunnier days.
