As a new cast enters Buckingham Palace for season 5, we find out what it takes to truly transform
I leave any preconceptions of who these people are at the door and instead look at them as if you’ve never seen them before. For each different person I collect lots of photographs and moving footage and I spend lots of time just working out as many things as possible. You start to see similarities between images, differences from when they’re in public or with someone who they’re in a relationship with. You start to notice things.
The main thing I tell actors playing royalty is it’s about learning to be observed and learning that being seen is part of your day in the same way that for you and me, it isn’t. We’re not in the public eye, so the way our bodies respond is not with the idea of being observed, judged or critiqued. So this is why I articulate to the actors that if you’re going to be seen all the time, you’re going to do less, because you don’t want to be revealed.
Essentially, they’re all different bodies. So it’s reworking it to find evidence and to give them enough to make that link from their younger self to where they are now. It was more about the idea of endurance, and particularly for Elizabeth [Debicki] as Diana being in the public eye for a long time and being used to it and knowing how to work it a little bit more in her favour.
