'Come on bro, you know I don't pay for windows to be shot. Can't pay for no hits. I would have chucked in £10k and squashed the bill but he shot the window'

A Salford crime lord directed underworld hits from hundreds of miles away in the Netherlands. A shooting and a raid on a family home were carried out on the orders of Nathan Vanden, who had fled from his native Greater Manchester after arousing the suspicion of the authorities.

Manchester Crown Court heard how a gunman opened fire at a house in Whitefield at about 1.35am on Tuesday, February 2020. No-one was hurt. Aaron Gray pulled the trigger, with Dominic Hughes, an associate of Vanden, acting as the go-between and 'custodian' of the Glock gun which was used in the incident.

An intermediary contacted Vanden, who offered a Glock for £6,000. The handover never took place because police seized the firearm, recovering it at a house in Radcliffe, Bury. Police visited the home following the incident on May 11, and were told that three or four men wearing balaclavas had arrived. They had told the man at the house that they were 'pizza delivery'.

Prosecutors said that he was extradited back to the UK in May 2021 after spending a year in prison. A year later he was sentenced for a crime committed in the Netherlands, receiving a three year sentence in his absence last year, the court heard. Vanden was said to have been involved in the 'violent abduction' of someone who had stolen a 'large quantity of cocaine' from a drugs gang.

He said it was ‘as clear as daylight’ that Vanden should be regarded as a ‘dangerous’ offender, and that his sentence should be extended for public protection. Vanden was sentenced to 21 years in prison. He must serve two-thirds of his jail term in custody, before the Parole Board decides whether it is safe for him to be released.
