If you're struggling to whittle down what to do this weekend, then Blackness Castle on the south shore of the Firth of Forth is a safe bet — especially if you're an Outlander fan

Those who have seen the series will no doubt remember back to the first season, to the pivotal scene in which protagonist Jamie Fraser is violently punished in the form of lashes by Jonathan"Black Jack" Randall . It is this brutal and gruesome sight that leads to the death of Jamie's father.

What you may not have known is that this memorable scene, meant to be taking place at Fort William, was actually shot at thefortress just out of Edinburgh. It also reappears later in the first season, when Jamie is required to break in and set Claire free after she is captured by the villainous Captain.

The real-life castle was constructed as a residence for the powerful Scottish Crichton family, though in the centuries that followed it became a royal castle, a garrison fortress, a state prison, and an ammunition depot. According to Historic Environment Scotland, Blackness Castle was decommissioned after the First World War and passed into state care as a visitor attraction. Today, it is open to the public and is well worth a visit — whether you're an Outlander fan or not.
