Many spectators watched from a special screening at Sneinton Market

Nottingham’s Sneinton Market bathed in sunshine on Wednesday , but it was the events over 10,000 miles away in Sydney, Australia, rather than the weather, that drew an expectant, yet nervous, crowd to the location.

Multiple young girls and women made up a lot of the crowd watching, many of which in England shirts as they were about to watch their heroes take on the Matildas. The first thing to say was the atmosphere at the pop-up event was fantastic. Everything came together, the weather, the food and, most importantly, the result.

Nicole was delighted with the halftime score and gave me her fulltime score prediction. She said: “It’s absolutely great at the minute. I just hope we get a few more of those. If we win today, I’ll be the happiest women. I’d say 3-1 [to England]. I’m always glass half full.” On having a Nottingham-native in the side, Sarah said: “It’s amazing and inspiring isn’t it. When we were at school, we didn’t have that [role model], but now the little kids, the girls, they do.”

The nerves returned once again but the faith was never lost. The crowd had grown bigger by this point as word of a tight semi-final and a free McDonald’s breakfast had spread.
