. In winter, bark colour and texture provides long-lasting interest in ways that shrubs and other plants cannot match.Birches are hugely popular with many new cultivars on the market with the classic silvery and white peeling bark through pink to red, and even black.
The bigger ones are perhaps better suited to parks, but others make great garden trees. The common practice of planting two or three close together, or even in the same planting hole, helps stunt their growth by competition and shows off bark well. Multi-stemmed trees also do not reach the same heights, but are relatively expensive.Betula gmelinii Mount Apoi is an especially compact, if slow growing, form with white bark developing with age, well suited to smaller gardens.
The best garden form is Betula pendula subsp pendula Tristis, with drooping branchlets. Himalayan birches are the whitest. Reliable favourites include Betula utilis var Jacquemontii, Grayswood Ghost and Doorenbos. It is unclear how newer forms will perform in the long term, but Moonbeam, said to be slower growing and more compact, looks promising.
Less striking but very pleasing are the many pink and coppery birch barks. Not as wildly popular as white stemmed trees, easy to find ones include Fascination with peeling orange, coppery bark. Uncommon forms include Mount Zao Purple, which has peeling purple and orange bark almost ringed with prominent pores in the bark.
