Ken Bruce has brought Greatest Hits Radio nearly a million new listeners. Curiously enough, the BBC’s rival show has lost about the same number 🤔 via ipaperviews

In 1962, a BBC radio producer took a chance on an unknown four-piece British group, recording a session with them for The Light Programme’sThe Beatles weren’t much known in London then but very popular beyond it. Six months later they had a manager and two hit records.

Think of the difference now. The BBC remains the champion of live music in every genre. On more than half its networks music acts as both anchor and magnet, whether folk, rap, classical, operatic, orchestral, choral or jazz. Dozens of commercial stations strive for individual musical styles, all seeking to reach listeners so devoted they won’t stray.

The key to keeping us listening to any radio station is the presenter, the host, the DJ. This person has to be knowledgeable but easy with it to make you feel at home. Not shouting, bossing or the audio leering that makes you want to wash your ears out. Impossible? No, but unusual and valuable. It’s what makes Ken Bruce such an asset, one the BBC must be kicking themselves for losing.

Goodbye radio set, hello app. But radio has stayed in step with social and technological change for half a century, as have audiences. If there’s someone we like listening to we’ll follow. The 60s were a true turning point in musical, social and racial history. The music from them takes us back to a time when anything seemed possible. My eldest son, born in Liverpool in 1960, has played in many a band since but I remember him and his best pal Nathan, then both aged six, standing on the coal heap in our back yard, playing tin guitars, singing “From Me To You”
