The story of the Art Deco masterpiece that was Glasgow’s first ‘skyscraper’
Glasgow city centre’s skyline is now dominated by modern glass skyscrapers, but almost one hundred years ago, there was just one building that stood above the rest.historyThe seven-storey masterpiece is one of Glasgow’s most recognisable and cherished examples of Art Deco or 'streamline moderne' architecture, and it is protected as a category B-listed building.
With a price tag of £170,000 – roughly £14 million with today’s inflation – the building was designed by architect William Beresford Inglis, who worked in the city’s nearby Blythswood Square. Inglis was also the Beresford's owner and managing director, and it was requisitioned and used to house American and British soldiers during the SecondIn 1939, a then 22-year-old John F. Kennedy gave his first public address at the Beresford on behalf of his father, then-US Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy.
