A motorist who attempted to fill three fuel cans with petrol at a Tesco garage was caught off guard when he was told he was 'breaking the law'.
A motorist who attempted to fill three jerry cans with petrol at a Tesco garage discovered a little-known policy that the supermarket has introduced. When Malcom Cupis, 54, poured fuel into the standard, five-litre containers to fill his ex-Army Land Rover Gloria with petrol, staff at the petrol station threatened to phone the police.
A spokesman for the supermarket giant this week told Malvern Gazette: "Under the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations, we are required to have a policy in place to ensure the safe use of portable fuel containers at our petrol stations. Our policy is that only two portable containers may be filled on each visit by a customer."
The motorist, from Keevil, Wiltshire, contacted Tesco via Twitter, now known as X, after the incident to ask which article of the law they were using to back up their policy. He was informed that a "maximum of two containers" for the carrying of fuel is allowed by law under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and the European Agreement Regulations.
