Takeaway told it cannot open later as safety concerns surface following death of student
A takeaway in Manchester has been told it must close at 11pm after residents raised concern about safety in the area, which has a large student population. Players in Wilmslow Road had its application for a late night licence rejected by councillors at a town hall hearing on Monday .
READ MORE: 'Bailiffs said they'd take my kids' toys away. Manchester should stop using them for council tax' Business partner Mian Malik told the licensing panel that many of the neighbouring premises on Wilmslow Road already open later than 2am. He argued that allowing Players to open until this time would not impact on the area and claimed that the move is necessary to save the 'struggling' business.
Together with licensing officers at the council, Greater Manchester Police recommended that the application for late night refreshment is refused. Representatives from residents groups described 'a general problem' on that stretch of Wilmslow Road, including rubbish, noise and anti-social behaviour.
