The Outhouse was installed beside Menlove Avenue in Woolton in 2005

The removal of a well known public artwork which hundreds of people passed everyday has divided opinion.

The ECHO was alerted to its disappearance in mid August and The Guinness Partnership, one of the stakeholders in the £375,000 project, has confirmed it has carried out the decommission of the structure and its removal. A spokesperson for The Guinness Partnership said the land where the artwork stood was taken on a short lease from Liverpool City Council and has now been handed back to the authority.

Reacting to the news earlier this week, one ECHO commenter said: “It’s been part of the community for so long. Such a shame it wasn’t used more especially as it’s been stood empty for a long time. I actually thought that the art work alone was nice to look at as you walked or drove past.” Built to be around two-thirds the size of a real house, the artwork featured blocks of sandstone arranged at differing heights inside it which marked the position where internal doors would be located in an original house. A description of Outhouse on the artists' website said: "The usual private nature of the domestic interior becomes open and social, but is still contained and protected.
