IT’S uncertain how much to be worried by this week’s poll suggesting Labour is gaining ground with voters in the upcoming Westminster election.…

What can we take from the polls? First, that there is a trend from the SNP to LabourBut first, those caveats. The Scottish Election Survey giving Labour a six-point lead in Westminster voting intentions is, to some extent at least, self-selecting. It was also contradicted by a second, more recently conducted, poll by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, which has the SNP and Labour tied at 32% in Scotland, at a UK General Election. That General Election is some way off.

Keir Starmer’s views on the tragedy unfolding in Gaza are so similar to the Tories that his own leader in Scotland Anas Sarwar has reportedly described them as “lacking empathy and humanity”. According to a leaked account of a meeting between MSPs and the Labour Muslim Network, Sarwar said a repair job with Muslim voters would be needed every day until the General Election.

Make no mistake… it’s not just independence Labour oppose – although they very much do oppose it – but any attempt to give the Scottish Government a higher profile or more powers. It’s an attitude summed up by a report this week by Gordon Brown’s think tank Our Scottish Future complaining that in recent years Scotland has had “too much politics”.

It’s true we are not significantly closer to achieving a second referendum but a referendum is not the only way of achieving independence . The case for independence has, however, advanced in key ways. The economic argument is stronger , the democratic argument is stronger and the consequences of not being independent more dire .

2: The suggestion that support for other independence parties – by which I mean Alba since most supporters of that party have no truck with theWhat support? Alba have not had a single party candidate elected in any election. Their single MSP and two MPs were all defections from the SNP. Their councillors all defected from the SNP. There is little sign that an Alba candidate will get elected any time soon. That’s not an argument against individuals joining or supporting Alba. It’s a free world.

3: There are those within the independence movement whose resentment of the SNP is so strong that they argue the party cannot be relied on to do anything other than actively work against independence. In which case it’s best to concentrate efforts on starting to build an alternative now.I honestly feel I’ve spent the last weeks pretty much writing the same column about the folly of allowing Labour to return even one more MP to Westminster.
