Asked if he wants to liberalise planning rules, the Prime Minister said: “We’ve got the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that will be making its way through Parliament and I think what you’ll see in that is an approach to planning that ensures that we get homes built in the places that we need them to be built, bring communities along with us on that.
“And with regards to supply-side reform, I think there’s lots we can do – not just planning, freeports are a good example of that. The labour markets are another opportunity; regulation when it comes to technology and innovation; there’s a bill going through Parliament on gene editing; or financial services. Across the board, I’m committed to driving up growth and I think there’s more than one lever we can pull – all of those would fall in the bucket of supply-side reform.
Policies to make it easier for companies to offer services and goods to consumers are seen by economists as a crucial way of boosting GDP growth. But any move to relax regulations, particularly on housing, could prove controversial and lead to bruising Parliamentary battles.
