Rosario Dawson plays the former Jedi n a new series linking her animated past with her live-action present
Star Wars: Ahsoka
– the latest Disney+ series set in a galaxy far far away – the biggest one was whether it could successfully bridge the gap between the franchise’s animation and live action series. Ahsoka Tano was first introduced as the Padawan to Anakin Skywalker in 2008’s animated series.
, she was close with Ezra and fought with him in that final battle. Bordizzo draws us into Sabine’s avoidant state of mind with little dialogue but plenty of personality. Her introductory scene – a thrilling speeder chase – showcases her bullish defiance and ingenuity. Sabine gets even more compelling when Ahsoka re-enters her orbit. The latter was once her Padawan, but things between them didn’t work out. Filoni cleverly communicates their tense reunion with little more than silence, neither meeting each other’s eye until absolutely necessary. Their journey towards full realignment is inevitable, but it already feels like something that’s worth getting invested in.
The storytelling is patient, and the scenes are carried by Kevin Kiner’s luscious score, which swells and calms at just the right moments. When that’s on pause, there’s architect droid Huyang on hand to offer wry and logical truth bombs and adding some welcome levity to proceedings.As for the action, when it does come time for Ahsoka to unsheath her signature white lightsabers, the battles that ensue are intense and dramatic.
