We can all play our part in helping to protect the future of Watford as WatfordMayor explains in his latest monthly column

I am proud of Watford’s rich and vibrant hospitality sector. The hundreds of pubs, bars and restaurants across our town provide jobs, support our economy and help create memories for residents and visitors.

This positive business environment has been down to careful work over many years by the council working closely with the police, businesses themselves and other groups. Thanks to this work, independent assessments by organisations such as the PublicFirst Nightlife Index show that the situation in Watford has improved, when most towns are seeing their nightlife declining. In the last decade we have welcomed a new cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall and many other activities to our town centre.

We all know that businesses have had a tough few years, having to deal with inflation, a tight labour market and high fuel prices. The cost of living crisis is now reducing the amount of money customers have to spend. Despite the difficulties, the vast majority of businesses remain open and our vacancy rate in Watford remains low - 7.8 per cent - compared to the national average of 13.8 per cent.

Our bars and restaurants continue to provide exceptional service, catering to the needs of residents and visitors. We also have other new businesses heading to our high streets. I was recently pleased to welcome TK Maxx to the town centre and look forward to when Dunelm opens later this year.

The long term health of our high streets can only be guaranteed if we continue to shop there and visit the hospitality businesses here in Watford. So please think of our spending local next time you celebrate a special occasion or spend time with your friends and protect Watford’s future.
