Sarina Wiegman's troops failed to score after Spain took the lead in the first half of the game, and went on to be crowned World Champions.
England failed in their bid to claim a first Women's World Cup after Spain won a narrow final 1-0. Olga Carmona's first half strike at Sydney's Stadium Australia was enough to win the tie, as the Lionesses failed to repeat their Wembley Euros heroics.
But they were short of their best on the day and can have no complaints. Spain could have killed the game just after the hour mark when Keira Walsh handled in the box and conceded a penalty. Jennifer Hermoso's spot kick was well saved by Mary Earps to keep England in the final until the death. England just couldn't find the equaliser, and Spain, who were the better side for much of the match, became the first European side to win the Women's World Cup since Germany in 2007.
James forced a superb save from Cata Coll as the Lionesses went for it but their hopes were finally ended in the dying seconds when Coll went up and claimed a corner that Earps had gone forward for.
