Sanditon star Sophie Winkleman, who is married in real life to Lord Frederick Windsor, opens up about her role in the ITVX drama as the King's mistress Lady Susan
She’s married to the Royal family’s Lord Frederick Windsor but Sophie Winkleman still needs a little help when it comes to behaving like a lady on the set of Jane Austen’s Sanditon. The actress - beloved by fans for her comedic turn as Peep Show’s Big Suze - stars as King’s mistress Lady Susan in the upcoming third series of the regency era drama.
After appearing at the end of the first series, Sophie’s character Lady Susan is back as the King’s mistress, a position that affords her immense power but little security. “She's the King's mistress, which makes her very powerful and very sucked up to,” explains Sophie. The drama is filmed on location in Bristol, taking Sophie away from the London home she shares with her daughters Maud, 9, and Isabella, 7. And she’s not afraid to say she cherished the peace and quiet - while still enjoying long landline chats with her eldest daughter.
My elder girl would call me every night to moan about various people in her class on the landline but my little one preferred not to hear my voice. She got upset and that was awful, I couldn't bear that but my husband did a brilliant job, my mother was wonderful and my sister-in-law too. We’re lucky enough to have very dear family who live close by so they were completely fine.”
“One of the great joys of acting is that on my second day, I ended up having lunch with Flora who was 10 and James Bolam, who was 87. That’s just what's brilliant about acting, you make an immediate family. You're all away from home. You're all doing very intimate scenes together from day one and the ensemble was magnificent. There are so many legends in it.”
Sophie is particularly fond of wearing a corset with her costume and she’ll get even more opportunities when she appears in Julian Fellowes’ Belgravia as Lady Rochester. “Some actresses hate them so much, and very bizarrely, I love them,” confesses Sophie. “I love being murdered every morning, when they are pulling you in! I don't know what kind of dark stuff that says about me.
