A struggling son ended his own life at a secure unit where he was taken for his own safety, a coroner's court has heard. Bren McFarlane's mum cried as she heard details about her 'likeable' son's death during an inquest yesterday .

Bren was resuscitated and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. However, four days later, when sedation was withdrawn, doctors discovered he had suffered a brain stem death. At an inquest being held this week at Blackpool Town Hall, jurors have heard that in the weeks before his death Bren had been discharged from the community mental health team after he refused to engage with them. He had also stopped taking his medication.
