Less than half of the building is filled with workers as 40 per cent of staff work from home

The new social security headquarters has an occupancy rate of less than 40 per cent due to staff working from home.

“The SNP has serious questions to answer about why they seem to be frittering away money running this ghost ship. Our social security budget must be spent helping those who need it most and the SNP must stop running costs spiralling out of control.” Between January and March this year, the average percentage of workstations being occupied stood at 38 per cent. Rent last year cost the taxpayer £541,200, rates totalled £148,001 and energy costs came to £251,895, while maintenance added another £506,795.

A Social Security Scotland spokesman said: “We introduced hybrid working following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in early 2022. This allows people to balance their work life with caring and other responsibilities. Offering this flexibility helps us retain a diverse workforce that reflects the people we serve.
