Sir Keir Starmer's latest attempt to address the conflict in the Middle East fails to change his unchanged position, causing a dilemma for him. Despite some tweaks to his language, he still argues for more violence in Gaza, which is not well-received by Muslim MPs and colleagues. They demand an immediate ceasefire, while Sir Keir maintains that Israel has the right to defend itself and a humanitarian pause is the best option.

Sir Keir Starmer is in a bind over the conflict in the Middle East and this was his latest attempt to unknot himself. It's unlikely to work because, ultimately, his position was unchanged. There were some tweaks to his language and emphasis but that does not change the fact that he is still making the case for more violence in Gaza , in the hope it can lead to peace. Winning over Muslim MPs and colleagues with large Muslim constituencies with this line of reasoning is a tall order.

He said today 'Israel must submit to the rules of international law', and that it cannot block fuel and medical supplies. This clarification of his position has been made before but it has failed to quell the dissent. This was probably no different. If there was one part of the speech that might move dissenters in his party, it was a criticism of Israel that he has been cautious about making until now.
