The chatter about 'quiet quitting' and 'lazy girl jobs' couldn't be further from the truth: today's young people are quicker to learn, much more personable, and very, very hard-working, says Sir John

. So I can understand why a lot of young people would want the structure of a 9-5 life and that clear demarcation. And I think there is also a level of pragmatism at play, where this generation is recognising they may not be able to achieve the things – like owning their own house – that their parents were able to achieve.

So maybe this generation’s success is recognising that and deciding they’re going to make sure they’re as happy as they can be. I think it’s a very sensible way of going about things.Trying to get on the property ladder is so tough now. To give you a snapshot: the first house I bought is now 60 times the price I paid 55 years ago. Owning your own house used to be a bigger aim than I think it should be now because it is so difficult.should not be the only measure of an individual’s success.

Also, the impression I get is that the work ethic doesn’t totally get ingrained in young people until aged 22 or 23. Until you get to that age, you don’t necessarily have a long-term perspective of what you’re doing. Life is still pretty much instant and the idea that at the age of 19 or 20 you will have a career where you’re still in the same job 30-35 years later is often beyond comprehension for most.

With our business, we have a great workforce because we make sure to pick wisely. To get through our door, you need to have the right personality. We want really bubbly outgoing people. We don’t bother about qualifications. We’re not interested in exam results, degrees or CVs. We just want sparky people – people you would want to work alongside. People you’d like to serve our customers.

And as employers, it is really up to us to make it a comfortable place to work and provide the ingredients to make work fun and rewarding. We have a responsibility to make sure they’re in a workplace they enjoy, rather than expect them to adapt themselves to what we want.
