The traditional method of storing bananas will see them turn brown within a matter of days
A food expert has shared a simple trick that will ensure your bananas stay yellow for longer, rather than turning into black-spotted much that is only good for baking. Experts say that storing bananas in a fruit bowl, or hanging them on a purpose-built 'hook' are not the way to go.Sharing the hack on the YouTube channel, Kitchen Tips Online, food expert Mike said you should instead keep your bananas in an airtight container.
The food expert demonstrated the hack by placing two identical bunches of bananas in different places - one loose on the kitchen counter and another inside an airtight container. In the container, he placed two Bluapple ethylene absorption balls alongside the fruit as a means of slowing down the ripening process.
Ethylene is a plant hormone that surges when the fruit is ready to ripen, turning the hard, green fruit tender and sweet. Beyond this stage, the ethylene simply continues to soften and change the flavour of bananas which is why they turn brown. Bananas ripen quickly due to a combination of factors, primarily the release of ethylene gas and the natural enzymes present in the fruit. Ethylene is a plant hormone that acts as a signalling molecule, promoting the ripening process. Bananas are also high in ethylene, and when one banana begins to ripen, it releases more of this gas, which accelerates the ripening of other bananas nearby.
