The shop has stood empty for a number of years
A boarded-up Ilkeston shop will receive urgent repairs after the local council deemed the building a danger to the public. The Albion building on Bath Street has been empty for a number of years, having once been home to the TV and electrical store Wigfalls.
Owners Vermion UK Ltd have now applied for the pavement and next-door side street to be closed so scaffolding can be put up and repairs made. Erewash Borough Council says it had hoped to make a compulsory purchase of the building, but a Levelling Up Fund bid was turned down in January. After putting pressure on the owners, action is now being taken. Councillor Alex Breene, Erewash's Lead Member for Town Centres, Regeneration and Planning, said: "I am pleased to see the start of remedial work on the Albion building in Ilkeston."Erewash Labour's manifesto was clear. Residents and landlords alike should expect this council to drive town centre regeneration and to do everything within its power to proactively bring empty commercial properties back into use.
