Darren Fletcher knows more than anyone the burden of shouldering midfield responsibilities for the Premier League giants
He's become a central figure for Scotland as Steve Clarke attempts to take the nation to new heights.
Two goals coming off the bench to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat just a fortnight ago eased the pressure growing on United boss Erik Ten Haag. And despite it looking like he was heading for the exit door with Newcastle and West Ham both linked with £50m moves just two months ago McTominay - with just two starts for his club this season - now looks set to stay for the long haul.
“He has great size, great profile and sometimes goalscoring comes with a bit of age and experience as well. He’s such a team player that he will be willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the team now that he’s realising he can add in other ways in terms of scoring goals and I’m delighted for him.”
But if he holds a grudge then Fletcher hides it well. And he reckons everything is falling into place for Clarke to reach new levels with his squad. He said: “It’s amazing. Since Steve Clarke has done in he has done a fantastic job. I like what he’s tried to do and the way he has gone about it. He is an experienced manager and has worked with top coaches.
“It’s an exciting time for Scotland. You feel it around the country, the fans are getting behind the team and long may it continue.”
