Declan and Ryan, both assault pioneers, are due to join the marching band having previously performed at the Queen’s funeral last year

Four Scots squaddies are set to swap extreme conditions and rifle drills for polished boots and musical instruments as they take part in the King’s Coronation this weekend. The soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland will join a band of around 100 on Saturday to perform on the monumental day.

The pair have recently returned home after being deployed to Oman where they trained while carrying 30kg packs in sweltering conditions over rough terrain. Speaking ahead of the Royal event, Ryan, a piper from Lanarkshire, said: "It’s a juggling act to say the least. Drummer Declan, from Penicuik, added: “I think it can be easy for the public to forget the other things we do when we aren’t on their screens. Yes, we perform at ceremonial events, but most of the time we’re either training, out on deployment, or jumping into whatever mission or military aid we’re needed for. And when this is the case, drumming just isn’t on the mind."

Graeme, from Eyemouth, said: “It’s gruelling. There’s very little time for a break and you never know what’s coming round the corner at any point. There’s no bed or restful sleep at the end of a day either – it’s constant. We set up tents and slept outside, you’re in a perpetual state of being on red alert.”
