Mandy Mirk was looking after her two grandsons when she went to the toilet and was horrified to find blood in the bowl.

A Scots grandmother has told of the terrifying moment she discovered she had a tumour growing in her bladder. Mandy Mirk, 59, from Dunbar, was looking after her two grandsons when she went to the toilet and was horrified to find blood in the bowl.

Mandy travelled to Kefalonia, Greece, but the worry stayed in the back of her mind. Upon returning it was revealed during an appointment at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh that she had a tumour growing inside her bladder. “But before I went they wanted to take blood and refer me to the urology department at the Western. I managed to enjoy the holiday but it was playing on my mind.

Mandy was sent for a scan of her kidneys later in June to see if the cancer had spread but thankfully it had not and she went for an operation to remove it on July 13.
