Martin Leitch, 42, rammed a police car during the high-speed chase through Lanarkshire and Glasgow, which he claimed was sparked by an armed figure telling him to drive off.

A driver who led police on a 100mph car chase after claiming he had been told to flee by a "shadowy" armed figure has been jailed for a year. Martin Leitch, 42, was spotted speeding in his Audi A6 in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, but failed to stop for officers.

Leitch, of Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire, went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he claimed a mysterious figure had ordered him to escape from police at gun-point. But a jury took less than an hour to unanimously convict him of dangerous driving. Sheriff Michael Higgins said there was no alternative to a custodial sentence and banned him from the roads for three-and-a-half years.

"It was disgraceful driving but I wasn't in the right frame of mind because I heard a bang and then woke up in a field 24 hours later. But to this day I feel the figure was real."
