The Scottish Government will introduce its new Winter Heating Payment in February to replace a benefit currently handled by the DWP.

Thousands of Scots could lose money as a result of changes to winter weather benefits, Labour has warned.

The current DWP benefit triggers a £25 payment only when temperatures are recorded or forecast at below zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days in their local area between November 1 and March 31. Pam Duncan-Glancy, the party's social security spokeswoman, claimed it was "unthinkable" for the Scottish Government to continue with the reform at a time of soaring energy costs.

"This raid on the budgets of the most vulnerable goes against everything Scotland’s social security system was supposed to stand for. In a written submission to MSPs, the charity said: "In the event of extreme weather conditions or indeed sustained low temperatures over the winter it is impossible to see anything other than a detrimental impact to those households in communities most likely to experience this."
