Constable Kayleigh Simpson is on trial for dangerous driving
A cop on trial for dangerous driving after knocking a school boy off his bike has told how she was searching for a violent domestic abuser who had been found with a ‘kill kit’ days before.
She said: “Two or three days prior to that night, I was on duty when my colleague had been involved in an incident where Mr Spratley had failed to stop in a vehicle that had been stolen. Unfortunately Mr Spratley managed to make off but there was another male within the vehicle along with a physical kill kit.
She told how she was halfway through her shift on March 15 when she was informed there had been a positive sighting of Spratley, who was known to often travel by bicycle. An airwave transmission played to the court heard an officer stating a black backpack had been found inside the vehicle, which was left unlocked.
She continued: “I was on a street not far from where the car had been ditched when I became aware of a male on a pedal cycle. My intention was to stop and talk to them to establish who they were and if they had seen anyone else in the area. After sending a message to the area control room stating that the unknown male - which later turned out to be the teenager - was ‘making off’, the constable continued to follow the youth onto a cycle path. She added that she had driven on that same cycle path on several occasions as there was no connecting road between the Auchmuty and Woodside area from there.
