Connor McManus signed up the Anthony Nolan stem cell charity and is urging others to do so if possible.

Connor McManus, 24, signed up to the Anthony Nolan stem cell charity registry around three years ago and in June he was found to be a match for someone who was gravely ill with blood cancer.

He decided to help after seeing people in his family fight blood cancer, and hopes that his story will encourage others to sign up to help people battling conditions such as lymphoma and leukaemia. “My family has a history of blood cancer with different relatives. My second cousin had blood cancer when he was very young and he was saved by a stem cell transplant at the time - it is something that has stuck with everyone."

“They considered delaying my medical and donation date as the person receiving the stem cells is too unwell to undergo the treatment. But it was decided that they would proceed and freeze my stem cells so that they could proceed immediately when the person was well enough.” “Anyone can join the registry between the ages of 16-35 but there are some exceptions for older people. I’d also like to shine a light on the race factor as there is a real shortage of minority ethnic people coming forward onto the registry.

Top news stories today The person making the donation has to be healthy and in a place where their body can produce stem cells at a reasonable rate.
