The discovery of a protein variant could revolutionise breast cancer treatment
Scientists have reportedly discovered a rare variant of a protein found in human cells which could revolutionise breast cancer treatment.
They also discovered that when this protein variant is not present, tumours wouldn't form and not cause any harmful effects on organs.Dr Ahmet Ucar, Breast Cancer Now research fellow at the University of Manchester, said: "For the first time, our research has shown that without RAC1B, breast cancer stem cells can't form tumours and become more vulnerable to chemotherapy, making the treatment even more effective.
In an experiment to demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment without RAC1B present, scientists transplanted breast cancer cells into mice. They discovered that cells lacking in the protein variant failed to develop any visible tumours after 100 days.
