Non-teaching employees were balloted for industrial action last week amid an ongoing pay dispute.

Scotland’s biggest council union UNISON balloted members over strike action regarding pay on Friday, with 24 out of 32 local authorities- including North and South Ayrshire councils - backing action after rejecting the five per cent pay offer from employer body Cosla.

No dates have been confirmed yet but the union say it is “likely to take place in early autumn”, with UNISON Scotland’s local government committee meeting this week to take the next steps to prepare for industrial action. “School staff would prefer to be in school working with children, not on picket lines and closing dozens of schools. But the Scottish government and Cosla should be in no doubt about the determination of school staff and they’ll do what it takes to get an improved pay deal for all local government workers.”

A UNISON North Ayrshire spokesperson added: “UNISON members are struggling to make ends meet with huge increases in housing, fuel and the weekly shop. It is now up to council leaders to recognise not only the justice of our pay claim but the strength of feeling among members to fight for a better offer.”
