One 15-year-old has launched a petition

Youngsters at a Lytham secondary school have accused the powers that be of taking away their identity by refusing to allow them to wear any jewellery at all.

In the petition, signed by more than 170 people, the pupil said: "I believe this is taking away our identity, the ban is not necessary at all, and wearing earrings does not affect our education or bring down our appearance in any way. Jewellery is one of the only forms of expression and individuality at St Bedes and [headteacher] Mr Marsden and the councillors are trying to take that away from us so we can 'look presentable'.

In a lengthy statement sent to LancsLive St Bede's deputy headteacher Reuben Gabrasadig defended the change in policy. He also questioned if those who had signed the petition had any involvement at the school. "It is regrettable that there seems to be some misunderstanding about the slight amendment to our uniform policy. I wish to clarify that we affirm the right of pupils to wear religious items. Our policy contains reference to the legal rights and duties which we uphold. We also permit the use of earring retainers for children who wish to wear these. However, we wish to clarify that jewellery or other aesthetic items, such as make-up, are not required or necessary for children in schools.
