Tyler Perry's latest will show a lesser-known side of World War II.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was formed after Black newspapers and presidential advisor Mary McLeod Bethune pushed for women of colour to contribute to the war effort, and the acknowledgment that there were not enough soldiers to handle the huge and ever-increasing backlog of US Army Mail."No mail, low morale" was their motto.
First travelling to the United Kingdom and then to France, the Battalion devised a method of sorting through and delivering the two years' worth of mail in half the time they were allotted. Although the vast majority of them did work in postal, some members also worked as cooks or mechanics, among other positions.
The group received some recognition through medals at the time, but it wasn't until the Obama administration and onwards that they started to receive more recognition. Today, it is reported that there are only six remaining members left alive.
