Saudi Arabia has reportedly executed 17 people in only 12 days despite Mohamed bin Salman's promise to phase out the death penalty.

said the country is limiting its use of the death penalty

Those put to death include four Syrians, three Pakistanis, three Jordanians and seven Saudis, the office’s spokespeople said today. How many people are on death row can be tricky to know as executions are confirmed by the Ministry of Interior only after they take place, the UN said. But among them is reportedly Hussein abo al-Kheir, a Jordanian man whom the UN says ‘may be at risk of imminent execution’.

The recent spree of executions brings the kingdom’s total beheadings to 144, a figure higher than 2020 and 2021’s tallies combined, standing at less than 140. The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights, a watchdog group, has questioned these charges and claimed defendants are denied access to lawyers.
