Sainz secured his first pole position of the season with Saturday's qualifying result.
If there was ever an ideal moment up until Saturday, Sept. 2, for Ferrari to knock it out of the park, today was it.Sainz made the tifosi’s dreams come true for Ferrari’s home race, narrowly beating out Verstappen to take pole position — and Leclerc wasn’t too far behind. The trio ran on the limit on those last flying laps, narrowly edging past one another, but there was reason for concern about whether the qualifying results would stick or if Ferrari could tumble out of P1 and P3.
Shortly after Q1 finished, it became known that the stewards planned to investigate Leclerc and Sainz after qualifying for allegedly failing to follow the race director’s instructions regarding the maximum lap time.
Sainz explained after qualifying that he “had to slow down so much to impede other cars that were fastest laps. It was almost impossible to respect the delta the race director us because if I would have respected it, I would have impeded my competitors. I just played it safe, preferred to not impede anyone, and even if I was one or two seconds off the delta, I think that’s safer than actually impeding someone.
With Ferrari slated for a first- and third-place start Sunday, is a home win realistic for the Prancing Horse after its confusing form this year? Red Bull, specifically Verstappen, has been uncatchable all season, and the Dutchman is looking to secure his 10th consecutive race win. The SF-23 has appeared to be performing well all weekend, particularly on one-lap pace as fans saw during qualifying. But Sainz said, “From what I’ve seen through the long runs, I’m not gonna lie, it’s trickier. It’s not the same picture as in quali. That Red Bull, as soon as you put five or six laps on the tire and everything starts to degrade a bit, it’s where they come, their strengths and the race pace that we’ve seen all year.
